IRS Information

The Employee Retention Credit

The Employee Retention Tax Credit or ERTC is a refundable tax credit for businesses and tax-exempt organizations that had employees and were affected during the COVID-19 pandemic. In general, filing for the credit means filing an amended tax return for wages paid to employees between March 13, 2020, and Dec. 31, 2021.

You can check to see if your business is eligible by using the IRS checklist tool.  If you think you may be eligible, reach out to a trusted tax professional for guidance in filing amended tax returns.

Note: The IRS continues to see aggressive marketing that lures ineligible taxpayers to claim the ERTC. While the credit is real, many promoters are aggressively misrepresenting who can qualify for the credit. In many instances, the IRS is seeing businesses and tax-exempt organizations being misled by promoters into thinking they’re eligible when they are not.  Anyone who incorrectly claims the ERTC must pay it back, possibly with penalties and interest.
